Nova Zembla (2011)

Nova Zembla tells the epic true story of the crew of the late 16th century Dutch ship that was forced to spend the winter on the frozen, arctic wasteland of Nova Zembla. Young Gerrit de Veer is deemed unworthy to marry the love of his life by her influential father. To prove his worth, he goes on the journey of a lifetime. He becomes an officer on board captain Willem Barents’ small merchant vessel, who is on a daring mission to find a Northern trade route to Asia to save the small Dutch republic from a choking blockade by the Spanish navy.

Their journey turns to tragedy when the ship gets stuck in ice, and the men are forced to spend the winter in the frozen, arctic wasteland of Nova Zembla, fighting polar bears, hunger and lethal temperatures. Their chances of making it until the following spring are virtually zero….
